Fire, irrepressible power, anthemic intensity: with these qualities, the American Marvin 'Hannibal' Peterson opened up new dimensions for trumpet playing in jazz in the 1970s.He named himself after the historical African general Hannibal and his band the Sunrise Orchestra. Despite their energy sometimes reminiscent of contemporary free jazz, the sextet's music remained rhythmically bound, tonal and deeply rooted in blues and spirituals. In 1977, the Sunrise Orchestra had a rousing performance at the Berlin Jazz Days, which was released on record a short time later. In 1981, Hannibal memorialized the victims of a mass murderer with the LP 'The Angels Of Atlanta.' For this he worked with a gospel choir.
