Description
The album was recorded in four sessions, on July 22, 29, August 4 and 18, 1958, at Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York and released in March 1959. It is the second collaboration between Davis and Evans, a splendid version of the famous masterpiece by George Gershwin, an opera is a tale of African-American life in Charleston, South Carolina, and features some of Gershwin's most famous compositions, including 'Summertime' and 'It Ain't Necessarily So'. Davis and Evans had worked together on the groundbreaking 'Miles Ahead' (1957) and would continue their collaboration with other iconic works like 'Sketches of Spain' (1960). The album reflects Evans's lush orchestral arrangements and Davis's lyrical trumpet playing, blending jazz with elements of classical and folk music and remains a landmark in orchestral jazz and a testament to the artistic synergy between Miles Davis and Gil Evans.
