Description
The Music and The Songs of The Scottish Diaspora
This album is a companion to the latest tapestry â The Scottish Diaspora â designed by the quite remarkable artist Andrew Crummy and stitched by numerous volunteers. The double CD (for the price of one) consists of 39 tracks selected from the Greentrax back-catalogue, licensed tracks and tracks specially recorded for the album, matching many of the tapestry panels. The tracks are as diverse as the Canadian song âScarborough Settlerâs Lamentâ by the late Stan Rogers; an aboriginal recording of âWaltzing Matildaâ; an Indian duo singing âAuld Lang Syneâ in Bengali plus the Scottish recording of this popular Robert Burnsâ song, which was part of the soundtrack of âSex and The Cityâ; to âThe Corby Songâ written by an unemployed Scotsman who followed employment, like many more, to the steelworks in Corby.Previously, Greentrax released âThe Battle of Prestonpans 1745â album (CDTRAX356) as a companion to the Prestonpans Tapestry which is currently on exhibition alongside the Bayeux Tapestry in France; and âThe Music and Song of The Great Tapestry of Scotlandâ (CDTRAX372D) in association with The Great Tapestry of Scotland Trust.Scotlandâs diaspora across the world was predominantly created by warriors, traders, missionaries, medical experts and farmers. And of course there were also large groups that were driven off the Highlands by landlords or by the rigours of unemployment to seek jobs and new homes. Their descendents today number 30 million and more, not counting England where the impact has been enormous. This eclectic mix results in a quite unique collection.
