Tenacious D is the audacious, genre-defying comedy rock duo founded by Jack Black and Kyle Gass in Los Angeles in 1994. Known for their blistering acoustic riffs, high-voltage theatrics, and over-the-top lyricism, the self-proclaimed "Greatest Band in the World" blends classic rock bombast with irreverent humor and surprisingly virtuosic musicianship.
The D’s breakthrough came with a short-lived but cult-beloved HBO series (1997–2000), which showcased their comedic dynamic and storytelling style. Their self-titled debut album Tenacious D (2001), featuring Dave Grohl on drums, spawned the cult hit "Tribute" and quickly solidified their legendary status among fans of comedy, metal, and alternative rock alike.
In 2006, they unleashed their feature film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, an outrageous origin story packed with rock opera absurdity and a thunderous soundtrack. Though the film flopped at the box office, it later gained a rabid cult following, and the band’s stature only grew. Their subsequent albums — Rize of the Fenix (2012) and Post-Apocalypto (2018) — leaned into the band’s mythos, tackling fame, failure, and the apocalypse with their signature blend of shredding and silliness.
Tenacious D has shared the stage with rock giants like Pearl Jam, Tool, and Foo Fighters, hosted their own Festival Supreme, and even won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance with their cover of Ronnie James Dio’s “The Last in Line.” Their live shows — whether as an acoustic duo or backed by a full band — are part comedy spectacle, part rock revival, and all-out party.
