Description
Lumi explores Classical affect on period instruments, joining Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn in a project of scholarly rigour and poetic curiosity.
This Da Vinci Classics album encompasses a series of romanze, Lieder, Mélodies and songs penned by Maude Valérie White on lyrics by authors such as Gabriele D’Annunzio, Heinrich Heine, Victor Hugo, Lord Byron, and also by the composer herself, performed by mezzosoprano Elisabetta Paglia and pianist Christopher Howell. Born in Dieppe in 1855, White studied abroad and was a truly international figure/ she studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Sir George Macfarren. After remaining orphaned, she earned her living with her music. In her heyday, until 1914, White enjoyed a high reputation and a more than adequate income on the strength of her compositions – enough to enable her to travel frequently. This was partly a matter of cultural curiosity, but ill-health increasingly obliged her to choose spa towns and places noted for their favourable climate. She published two volumes of memories and spent her last years in London, where she died in 1937. This album displays the variety of her literary and musical inspirations, ranging from high literature to folk music and ballads.
