The Folk Poetry of the Brazilian NordesteÂ : two major genres are presented here: the Â«aboioÂ», or cowman's song, a song used by cowmen to gather their herds. The Â«emboladaÂ» is a living tradition descending from the Portuguese, a vocal joust between two Â«repentistasÂ» accompanying themselves on the tambourine and improvising with humour on set forms, singing about the daily life.
