When riots unexpectedly cancelled their scheduled performance at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival, RCA VICTOR gathered Nashville's first-call musicians for an impromptu session on a Newport mansion lawn. Performing for an invited audience, 'The Nashville All-Stars' revealed their love for jazz, unshackled from restrictive commercial expectations. Later that year, RCA VICTOR released seven tracks on 'After The Riot At Newport', showcasing Chet Atkins, Hank Garland, Boots Randolph and newcomer Gary Burton supported by seasoned session men Floyd Cramer, Brenton Banks, Bob Moore and Buddy Harman. Available for only eighteen months, the album quickly became a collector's item. Performances that didn't fit onto the record were shelved, lost and forgotten - until now. 'The Garden Party' reveals what that Newport audience heard forty-five years ago. The enclosed CD adds eight tracks to the newly restored original album, three featuring jazz vocalists Andy & The Bey Sisters, back in the United States after more than a year in Europe. The new edition contains rare photos and graphics along with an essay about Jim Flora's distinctive cover design. Music expert Dave Samuelson contributes detailed notes on the Newport Jazz Festival, the Nashville musicians invited to perform there, and the riots that prematurely ended the 1960 event.
