Every aspect of If Not Now, When? evolved very quickly, purposefully, and with a deep sense of synchronicity. Shortly after the music was composed, I recorded and submitted it for the New Jazz Grant at Chamber Music America. Some months later, I was notified that I had been awarded the grant! What a grateful surprise!
The band...Bill, Harvie, Jason and I also came together effortlessly. I knew Bill from the years we both spent in the 70's Latin scene. We crossed paths many times over the years. But, when our mutual friend, Dave Valentín started to have health problems, we seemed to gravitate more and more towards each other. He produced and played on two of my CDs and we discovered a musical connection that felt very natural and organic. Harvie and I knew each other from the days when the Village Gate had music upstairs. One night I remember going up to him after a set and introducing myself. Jason was the newbie to the group! Bill and Harvie highly recommended him for the project and they were right! He was the perfect fit.
Out of all my projects, this recording is the closest yet to my heart. Our concept behind the music is to create while listening intently to each other, and to provide a safe musical space where all expression is honored and accepted. This allows for true collaboration between the musicians and musical fluidity each time we perform. Bill, Harvie and Jason play in such a way that each note that is played is heard and supported, which is so important in this type of creative endeavor. This musical environment allows for full expression in the moment, which to me is the goal of improvising, and ultimately, in life. My true intention for this music is to share all I have learned, continue to learn and experience about what is most important in life - love - with you, the audience. We always hope that who we are as musicians can directly translate into what we play and be received in that same spirit. So, sit back and enjoy our music!
