Description

Simple Life and Heavy Nights is a new studio album by Quadro Nuevo accordionist Andreas Hinterseher, blending virtuoso tango and world music.

Andreas Hinterseher's Simple Life and Heavy Nights is a deeply personal instrumental journey through contemporary tango, European world music and intimate chamber textures. Recorded largely by Hinterseher himself at his private studio in Fischbachau in the Bavarian Alps, the album reflects the contrasts suggested by its title: uncomplicated pleasures and moments of freedom set against darker nights of introspection and creative struggle. Written, arranged and performed over several years, its 13 pieces draw inspiration from everyday life, Alpine landscapes, travel and the emotional extremes of the creative process.

Best known internationally as a core member and multi-instrumentalist of the German acoustic ensemble Quadro Nuevo, Hinterseher approaches the recording with remarkable self-sufficiency. He performs nearly every instrument himself, layering accordion, bandoneon, vibrandoneon and piano with trumpet, flugelhorn and trombone to create the sound of an ensemble from what is essentially a highly personal studio project. Select guests expand the chamber palette, including Tanja Conrad on violin, Anna Rehker on cello, Philipp Schiepek on guitar and Didi Lowka on upright bass.

Twelve Hinterseher originals move fluidly between tango, Balkan rhythms, lyrical chamber music and the nostalgic atmosphere of Parisian musette. 'Anja Tanja' is propelled by a driving tango pulse, while the energetic 'Makarska' draws upon Balkan influences. Among the album's most intimate moments is 'Letters From The Dark,' recorded on the Greek island of Samos during winter in a single live take. Hinterseher also pays tribute to the tango tradition with a solo accordion interpretation of Carlos Gardel's 'El Día Que Me Quieras,' placing one of the repertoire's enduring standards alongside his own compositions.

Developed from a lockdown-era philosophy of musical self-reliance, Simple Life and Heavy Nights turns independence into an artistic principle rather than merely a method of recording. Hinterseher's virtuosity serves a collection concerned as much with atmosphere and storytelling as instrumental technique, shifting between melancholy and exuberance, solitude and movement, darkness and release. For listeners drawn to Astor Piazzolla, Richard Galliano and Quadro Nuevo, the album offers an intimate showcase for one of Europe's distinctive contemporary accordion voices.
