In the creative improvised music world, the 'heralds of excellence' sometimes make a typical cultural mistake of touting very young musicians to the exclusion of musicians in their 'middle period'; a time of deepening of expression and a shedding of facile ideas that comes after a few decades. This is obviously not a rule but is something I have witnessed over decades of making music and observing the evolution of numerous creative musicians. It may be a bi- product of youth worship in Western culture whereby people (artists) become less interesting as they age.
Angelica Sanchez is in that middle period, and this collection of music belies a developmental stage of broadening and depth. There is a patience and confidence exhibited in all of the musicians on this date that results in a strong, expressive, and coherent modern artifact. In an age where many tend to sample music in coffee spoons, a complete listening of this album offers infinitely greater rewards. There is much to savor here, and the arc of the album is impressive, lending itself to the book reading process rather than the CliffNotes version (1). In listening to the entire album, dynamics, touch, and innate lyricism are constantly confirmed within compositions with large amounts of open-form improvisation. Beginning from the introductory drum exposition by Chad Taylor in Funny Thing to the final mallet on tom toms rallentando at the end of Put Your Hand in Black Hole, this collection tells many stories.
Like distant voices from the dreamscape heading to the outer reaches of ineffability, these musicians are clearly hearing and feeling each other and my impression is that they have tapped into the collective ether and improvise together beautifully as a quadra-dimensional unit.
