The Essercizii Musici collection comprises 24 items, half of them designated 'Solo' and half 'Trio'. Most of the Solos are sonatas for solo instrument and continuo, the exceptions being the two for harpsichord alone. The pieces are carefully arranged, with alternating solos and trios; the work as a whole falls into two halves each with solos in the same order. In other respects the order of the compositions appears to be such as to provide variety both of instruments and of mood. There are thus two solos for violin,two for recorder, two for gamba, two for transverse flute and two for oboe, all with continuo. The harpsichord solos consist of a prelude and dance movements. Each of the solo instruments features in four ensembles. Of the fifteen potential combinations Telemann has for some reason failed to make use of recorder and transverse flute, oboe and gamba, violin and harpsichord. The two discs in this album contain the first 12 items in the collection: six solos and six trios.
