Music Web. Villa Lobos is probably the best known of the Latin American Classial Composers. His musical training came from his father and later from his friendships with popular singers and street musicians of Rio. He was a member of a troup of 'choroes', playing the guitar, for which he later composed a series of fourteen works known as Choros. He learned about Debussy, Wagner, Puccini and Stravinsky by joining the orchestra of the Recreio Theatre, spent time travelling around Brazil listening to Brazilian Folk Music, later using it as an inspiration for his compositions. His best known works are the Bachiana Brasileiras. The Bachianas are described by Villa as an attempt to combine the folk music of Brazil with the musical style of Johann Sebastian Bach.
