Two discs of South & North American Bossa Nova from 1954 - 1962

With its caressing, bittersweet melodies, sinuous rhythms, and seductive aura of jazz-inflected cool, it's no wonder that the Brazilian-born Bossa Nova sound swept America off its feet in 1962.
The real catalyst that ignited the explosion was an LP on Verve Records called Jazz Samba, an inspired collaboration by tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist Charlie Byrd.
The record went on to spend 70 weeks on the Billboard 200 and spawned a No.15 single in 'Desfianado'. A few months later, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Carlos Lyra, Luis Bonfa, Oscar Castro Neves, Sergio Mendes and other significant Brazilian composers and musicians travelled to New York for a one-off concert at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. By summer 1964, when Jobim's 'The Girl from Ipanema', with its sultry vocal line delivered supremely by Brazilian singer Astrid Gilberto, had climbed to No.5, Bossa Nova had become an American epidemic. And it wasn't long before North American Jazz musicians as diverse as Miles Davis, Herbie Mann, Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Zoot Sims and myriad others assimilated the Brazilian sound into their own arrangements and thus into the American mainstream.

This collection brings together more than 50 of the most pivotal recordings from the early Bossa Nova scene. CD 1, Bossa Nova Brasilia, charts the evolution in its native Brazil while CD 2, Bossa Nova USA documents the idiom's export and rapid absorption into the mainstream of early '60s American Jazz. All together this collection presents a vivid portrait of Bossa Nova music in both South and North America, during the period 1954-1962.
