Description
Boys Go to Jupiter is a surreal animated coming-of-age comedy from writer-director Julian Glander, transforming suburban Florida into a pastel-colored landscape of strip malls, swimming pools, delivery apps and extraterrestrial life. It's the day after Christmas, and 16-year-old Billy 5000 (Jack Corbett) has a very specific goal: earn $5,000 before New Year's Eve. While his friends spend the holiday limbo slacking, shoplifting and beatboxing, Billy cruises town on his hoverboard making food deliveries for the Grubster app and chasing the promise of financial independence.
A routine delivery to the Dolphin Groves Juice Company reunites Billy with his childhood crush Rozebud (Miya Folick) and leaves him unexpectedly responsible for Donut, a mysterious alien creature that has stowed away in his backpack. That discovery puts him at odds with ruthless juice-company mogul Dr. Dolphin (Janeane Garofalo), setting off an increasingly strange series of events. Glander's tactile, lo-fi CGI animation provides the perfect setting for a story that moves freely between deadpan comedy, musical interludes, science-fiction fantasy and observations about adolescence, work and money.
The expansive voice cast includes Tavi Gevinson, Elsie Fisher, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, Julio Torres, Joe Pera, Sarah Sherman, Cole Escola, Eva Victor, Chris Fleming, River L. Ramirez, Max Wittert and Demi Adejuyigbe. Beneath its absurdist surface, Boys Go to Jupiter examines friendship, first love, gig-economy labor and the uneasy transition into adult responsibilities. The film was selected for festivals including Tribeca, the Ottawa International Animation Festival and the Glasgow Film Festival, and received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for the John Cassavetes Award.
