What a family affair! Carey and four sons. Lurrie, then a young torchbearer for authentic blues; Steve, a harp player like his daddy who showed a developed style and musical maturity; James and Tyson - incredibly young but an amazing rhythm section - completely at ease with this Chicago blues style. This is the original 'Dynasty' album with improved mastering (to bring out the funkiness and the interplay between the musicians even better) plus two bonus tracks recorded on the only European tour made by the complete family band. Working with Carey Bell was an 'adventure'. On one hand there was the Carey who would make a stop at the liquor store on the way to every gig but also there was his sharp mind and nimbleness. One thing that sticks in my mind was that at gigs he would never bother with a sound check, never need an amp. He would simply grab the p.a. vocal mike and play through that - and of course achieve a tone and sound that other harmonica players would have died for. If he sounds like a loveable rogue he was. He had that indefinable confidence that if he upset one label owner/booker/agent, then another would come along because talent like his is rare. I understand that Carey told people that he liked his JSP albums the best of all his work (he would never have told me that...) True or not, this is blues at its best and most dynamic. JOHN STEDMAN
