Description
Balladen und Fantasien places Brahms and Schumann in an inward Romantic sphere where piano writing becomes myth, memory and drama.
Following a long-established model, sets of Preludes are offered as self-standing pieces, without the need for a Fugue after each of them. This Da Vinci Classics album presents a series of Prelude sets, written or transcribed for the piano. The first collection is that of Heitor Villa-Lobos Five Guitar Preludes, composed with Segovia in mind but effectively transcribed for the piano. Then come the four Preludios encadenados by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, followed by the set of twelve “American” Preludes by Alberto Ginastera, paying homage to several of his American colleagues. The album is completed by an oddly-numbered set of thirteen Preludes written by Canadian composer Jean Coulthard, a female composer who found her personal compositional voice in a fruitful dialogue between tradition and modernity.
