Buffalo, New York's Cemetery Echo emerge from the shadows with Civitas Lacrimarum, the band's debut full-length and most ambitious descent yet into the style they call "Haunt 'n' Roll." Cemetery Echo occupy the intersection of goth, punk and metal, combining blackened deathrock, gothic post-punk, occult rock, thrash and dark melodic grandeur into music built as much for a midnight dance floor as a metal club. Steeped in 1980s horror imagery, gothic romance, occult mysticism and dystopian atmosphere, the band has developed an identity in which theatrical presentation and memorable songwriting are as important as aggression.
Before reaching its first album, Cemetery Echo established its underground reputation through earlier releases associated with Hammerheart Records and Sunshine Ward and through immersive live performances the band describes as "creepshows." Appearances alongside Unto Others, Nox Novacula and Panopticon illustrate the unusually broad territory the group inhabits, connecting the dark post-punk and deathrock scenes with contemporary underground metal. That crossover is central to Cemetery Echo's appeal: gothic atmosphere and post-punk rhythms coexist with metallic riffing and eruptions of black-metal intensity rather than functioning as separate stylistic exercises.
On Civitas Lacrimarum, Cemetery Echo pushes beyond the gothic romantic aggression of its earlier work toward a larger, darker and more anthemic sound. Black-metal ferocity collides with deathrock swagger, gloomy post-punk textures, thrash momentum and horror-soaked melodies, creating a soundtrack for a decaying modern world. The album expands the mythology surrounding the group while preserving the hooks and dramatic atmosphere that have distinguished Cemetery Echo from more narrowly defined goth or metal acts.
Mixed and mastered at Blackheart Studio with visual artwork by Sadist Art Design, Civitas Lacrimarum presents Cemetery Echo's aesthetic as a complete world rather than simply a collection of songs. Sinister, rebellious and deliberately theatrical, the album establishes the Buffalo band as a meeting point for creatures of the night drawn equally to leather-jacket rock & roll, deathrock clubs, occult horror and extreme metal.
