Hollywood composer
Ernesto Lecuona was probably one of the most important and reknown of the Cuban composers. Musically, his sophisticated and technically demanding piano pieces succeed in blending Afro-Cuban rhythms with what, for want of a better description, is called Western Art music, and in that respect he could be called one of the first genuine 'crossover' composers.... in the young London-based Brazilian pianist Clélia Iruzun, the Lecuonas find an ideal performer. The music's hypnotic and sensuously seductive rhythms come as second nature to her - and are almost an invitation to dance - whilst the more pianistically challenging works find her fully equal to their considerable technical demands. ''Classical Source. In 1942, his great hit, 'Always in my heart' (Siempre en mi corazón) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song; however, it lost to 'White Christmas'.He was best known for putting rogether the Lecuona Cuban boys. The Lecuona Cuban Boy became the rage in the United States, Europe and South America, playing arrangements of popular Cuban dances such as congas, rumbas and songs. Even today it's possible to buy CDs of the Lecuona Cuban Boys featuring guest artists like Josephine Baker. Lecuona's greatest gift is his ability to embed Afro-Cuban music in his own works, producing fabulous collections of Dances for piano.
