A superb trio, playing the bani of Cole Porter with an excellent variety of tunes, atmospheres, and tempos.

Approaching Porter in the company of Phil Woods's customary rhythmics, Liebman instead respects the great songwriter's melodic beauty by implementing a sort of thematic improvisation that tends to reduce the armonic in favor of a predominantly horizontal construction. A procedure that is not new in Liebman, referring back to the lesson of Sonny Rollins: an artist who is never mentioned when speaking of the sopranist, for whom the definition of Coltranian, seems to have become the convenient foothold for defining, along with its origins also its tendencies. And of Rollins here there is also the allusiveness and rigor in handling a trio that lacks the superb openings and interplay, complementing and stimulating Liebman's solo playing. Gilmore in particular showcases a beautiful, deep sonority and a phrasing with sinuous lines.
