The 2 CD set really has what it takes to rise up like a twin star in the firmament of acoustic jazz.
A 2 CD Recording
From exuberance to melancholy, Friesen, Porter and Jones have musically portrayed the whole emotional range associated with that special kind of affection; sensitively, artistically and elegantly. If love can be heard, it sounds like this.
David Friesen's album on Intuition, ''Live At The Jazz Bakery'', came out in May 1999 (in a duo with pianist Dennis Zeitlin) and garnered absolutely rave reviews. ''A jamboree, an effervescent delight for the ears. What else can you say when everything is right about an album? Nothing! Just keep on listening'' is what the magazine FonoForum, for one, wrote about the production -- and there was a long list of similarly enthusiastic responses. Now, prediction is a risky business -- but nonetheless it seems fair enough to prophesy an equally positive reception for this latest release, the double album ''The Name of A Woman''. The 2 CD set really has what it takes to rise up like a twin star in the firmament of acoustic jazz. Always at the highest standard, Friesen, Randy Porter (p) and Alan Jones (dr) pay homage to the fair sex (as the title suggests) by means of 15 wonderful songs on subject number one; they include classic compositions by Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, Lee Morgan and Bud Powell, as well as contributions by Porter and Friesen themselves. To return to the eulogy quoted above: what else can you say about an album of this caliber, other than 'it's fantastic''. . . ?!
