Description
Noise-rock quintet fronted by a wailing, shifting voice: Deefait twist Fugazi riffs and Boredoms noise into 35 minutes of possessed psych-rock.
It took a strange coincidence to give birth to Deefait, a band whose slightly loser-ish name masks real ambition. It started with the 9,000 km that took Ric Lara from Mexico City to France -- the band's name, DF, is Mexico City's other name, and the setting of Roberto Bolaño's novel The Savage Detectives, which shaped their first EP. Then came the Stay Hungry sessions: born in 2021 during lockdown, Ricardo (with Grégoire Couvert and Enir Da) hosted musicians at home to play unusual instruments, then recorded the conversations as voiceover material. That's how he met Pays P, fronted by the Valero brothers, fresh off a support tour with Big Thief. Five musicians who shared a love of Fugazi, Boredoms, Terminal Cheesecake, CAN and Gnod found each other -- and Deefait was born. Their self-titled debut EP (December 2025) captured the alchemy between the five members: a wall of guitars, incantatory percussion, possessed vocals -- a kind of noise ritual. For the album, they went further, recording at the legendary Black Box studios in Angers with Peter Deimel, before handing the mix to Andy Blundell. Where the EP was heterogeneous, the album asserts a more organic unity: seven tracks, 35 minutes of one continuous, feverish descent. Ric Lara's vocals -- shifting between English, French and Spanish -- favour timbre and rhythm over intelligibility, earning the band their recurring 'heliumcore' tag: a wailing, piercingly high voice over a bass-driven structure, guitar layers tangled around it. From the dense opener Will More through the galvanising I Promise to Divide You, the 90s-grit chaos of Satan's Brew, and the doom of 2440, to closer DF, the record plays like an occult ritual of tribal invocation. The band has built a reputation on the road, from underground and squat circuits in France and the Netherlands to bills alongside Suuns and Zu, and slots at La Route du Rock (winter) and The Great Escape. Deefait, their debut album, arrives 2 October 2026 on Ici d'Ailleurs.
