Light of Day the debut album from New York vocalist Devorah Day, a release that fundamentally bridges the lineage of mid-century vocal giants with the uninhibited spirit of 1960s free jazz. What sets Light of Day apart historically is its startling, radical instrumentation. Stripping away the conventional safety nets of piano and drums, Day is backed solely by a triple-saxophone section, anchored by a rare, late-career performance from legendary saxophonist Marion Brown (John Coltrane's Ascension), alongside Jorge Sylvester and Booker T, and the fluid, fragmentary acoustic bass of David Colding (with guest vocal instrumentation by beatboxer Kid Lucky). Without a percussive grid or chordal center, the multi-horn arrangement creates a spacious, floating harmonic canvas, leaving Day's voice to navigate uncharted territory. Day commands this fluid space with staggering vocal gymnastics, shifting effortlessly from delicate, airy glissandi to gut-wrenching bass resonance.
