2020 was to be the year that the Dominican Jazz Project returned to the studio. It had been far too long since the 2016 self-titled release. The band was very productive, performing at festivals in the Dominican Republic, playing jazz clubs, and performing and giving masterclasses at universities, but they needed to return to the studio to create more music. Yet, as was the case for the rest of the world, the sudden turn of events brought on by the pandemic created unanticipated challenges...Stephen Anderson decided to use the new-found time to hibernate in the 'compositional woodshed,' and began composing several new works that draw on various folkloric rhythms and concepts from different parts of the Dominican Republic that Guy Frómeta, David Almengod, and Sandy Gabriel had hipped him to. Carlos Luis had previously composed two beautiful ballads that would be used for the project--and they would draw from Guillo Carias' library of originals, recording his beautiful tune, Si Tu Supieras. In addition, Siempre Adelante, from the late Jeffry Eckels rounds out this solid Latin Jazz offering. (Eckels had recorded w/ Anderson for 19 years prior to his passing...)

The challenges continued with the passing of respected Dominican musician, Sócrates Gabriel (father of saxophonist, Sandy Gabriel), as well as the hospitalization of the mother of renowned Cuban bassist, Ramon Vázquez Martirena.

This is the Dominican Jazz Project. Enjoy!
