Description
During the late 1980s and early 1990s there was a pocket of inner Copenhagen called Pissrenden ('The Piss Trench') that became something like a version of San Francisco's Haight Ashbury section. in the centre of it was Sabine's Cafeteria, which grew from a coffee shop into a bar, then into a social hub that became a venue for the Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
Recently discovered in the estate of a late, local jazz aficionado was a breathtakingly brilliant duo recording of guitarists Doug Rainey and Nicolai Gromin, playing at Sabine's on July 16th 1993.
This is a magnificent document of two jazz guitarists, one American and one Russian, in total command of their instruments and with total musical rapport and respect for each other.
The tunes are natural choices for both guitarists, standards, though each provide one original each. An extraordinary document and essential listening for jazz guitar buffs everywhere.
