ON AFAR, the new opus of the Doumka Clarinet Ensemble you find a similar melodic beauty and rhythmic power which helped their first CD (Café Rembrand, TIP-888847) to attain great popularity. Now added are double bass and and complex percussion which mix with the sound shadings of the clarinets. The subtle bouquet of compositions evoking the Mediterranean landscape - a wonderful Voilée, a feverish Don Quichotte, memories of the desert Sable and Djebel, more than ever the sound of the Clarinet Ensemble links Europe with the Orient. The classically trained musicians Hervé Bouchardy, Franck Renée and Alexis Ciesla combine dreamlike moods with sensitive rhythm and exhilarating improvisational fantasy.Through the sounds of their diverse clarinet timbres - ranging from the piccolo to the bass register - the three of them suggest to create impressions of the ugav, a legendary wind instrument that - according to biblical tales - could be heard emunating from the tents of Jubal the Nomad.
