Penetration Moon captures a rare and chaotic detour in the Dwarves' extended universe, documenting the short-lived early '90s side project led by Blag Dahlia and Sgt. Saltpeter. Conceived as a reaction to the polished glam revival of the era, the band set out to reinterpret "true" glam rock--not through Bowie or T. Rex, but through the raw, confrontational energy of proto-punk and gutter rock. The result is a deliberately warped vision of glam: one built on covers of GG Allin, the Dead Boys, The Weirdos, and Johnny Thunders, filtered through a lens of grime, distortion, and irreverence.
Originally limited to a scarce two-song 7-inch, these recordings have since been compiled into a long-overdue archival release, preserving sessions from the early '90s that remained unheard for decades. What emerges is less a polished album than a volatile document--loose, abrasive, and gleefully unrefined. Tracks like "Real Wild Child" are stripped of any rock & roll sheen and rebuilt with a sandpaper edge, while "Caught With The Meat" leans into the same sleazy, confrontational spirit that defines both the Dead Boys and the Dwarves at their most unhinged.
Throughout, Penetration Moon walks a fine line between parody and authenticity, reveling in the tension between nihilism and dark humor. Slowed-down takes like "Life of Crime" reveal the blues roots lurking beneath punk's surface, even as the band injects subtle absurdities and inside references that hint at the proto-Dwarves sensibility taking shape. The result is a fascinating artifact: part homage, part deconstruction, and entirely committed to the messier, more dangerous side of underground rock history.
