EDDIE LUDEMA PUSHES past codified norms and genre divisions...
'Live' electronics with Lucas Borges (trombone), Eleanor Christman (cello), Glen Dimick (tuba), Shandra Helman (bass clarinet), Eddie Ludema (trumpets)
Tonspiel
All sounds (other than the middle section's synth bass) are sourced from the trumpet via granulation and spectral delay: two DSP techniques that zoom into a sound's harmonic makeup.
Out of Hand
the computer plays a multifaceted role, ranging over the continuum between fixed-media accompaniment and improvised responses based on real-time analysis of the live performance. The musicians lead us across several contrasting landscapes, sometimes taking diverse positions on the underlying material, and other times trading the same isolated fragments.
PvP
The trumpet and tuba fight on a battleground of bloops and bleeps. And no one can say who shall emerge victorious...
Vestiges
Aimed to depict the trumpet doing its most trumpety things - fanfarish machismo, bravado in loud-and-high licks - that style that represented the vestiges of classical training - and then they would all get swallowed up by reverb, techno grooves, walls of electronic noise, the horn would scream over them to be heard and remembered but ultimately be walked away from and left in a pool of time-stretched, granulated recordings of itself...
Bix a Beh?
Its vibe surprisingly brings memories of Yucatán - the energetic music of the Mayab, the sound of guitars in the street, the boisterous children swinging by branches and gleefully asking for photos with the güerito, the techno thumping out of rural thatched roof shacks, the crystal clear starry night skies, the pachangas with festive piñatas and panuchos, and the heavy humidity with its warm embrace (depicted by loads of reverb!)
