Johann Sebastian Bach’s English Suites were likely composed to show off the skills of the young keyboard virtuoso. They follow the typical dance movement structure of his age, to which he has added preludes. And indeed, Bach himself called the series “Suites avec leur préludes.” The later name is thought perhaps to refer to an English person who commissioned the pieces, or more likely, to harpsichord music by Charles Dieupart, who had published his work in London and which Bach had copied in his own hand.
