Songs by Maude Valérie White reveal a cosmopolitan voice shaped by poetry, travel and a rich blend of literary and musical influences.

The series of which this Da Vinci Classics album is the first volume aims to present four composers generally associated with the Mendelssohnian world, bookending each of them with two sets of Mendelssohn’s own Lieder ohne Worte. Paradoxically, the result shows how little they adopted either the master’s tone or his methods. Carl Reinecke was a student of Mendelssohn/ in this CD he is represented by his Fantasy in the form of a Sonata, op. 15 (1848) and by a set of eight Ländler (op. 152, of 1879). Along with these works, which embody both his “serious” and his lighter vein, the album comprises the first two sets of Songs without Words, the iconic genre crafted and perfected by Felix Mendelssohn.
