Description

This Busoni programme unites the Elegien, Sonatina IV and Toccata, where Young Classicism reshapes memory into a renewed pianistic lexicon.

i>Elegien * Sonatina IV * Toccata presents a concentrated portrait of Ferruccio Busoni's late piano language--one of the most intellectually ambitious and forward-looking bodies of work at the threshold of modernism. These compositions, written during the final phase of his life, mark a decisive break from late Romantic idioms and articulate Busoni's concept of 'Young Classicism,' in which tradition is neither rejected nor imitated, but transformed into a new, expanded musical syntax.

The Elegien, BV 249 stand at the center of this transformation. Conceived as a cycle of seven pieces, they function less as character miniatures than as a laboratory of harmonic and formal innovation. Drawing on material from Busoni's earlier and future works--including Turandot, the Fantasia contrappuntistica, and the Piano Concerto--the cycle unfolds as a network of references, where memory and invention coexist. Tonality is stretched beyond conventional limits, often dissolving into layered harmonic fields, while melodic writing becomes increasingly internalized, embedded within dense contrapuntal textures rather than projected outward.

The Sonatina IV in diem nativitatis Christi, BV 274, composed in Zurich during World War I, offers a striking contrast in scale but not in depth. Cast in a single movement, it condenses a vast expressive range into a restrained, almost meditative form. Its subdued dynamics, modal inflections, and chorale-like passages evoke a private, introspective atmosphere--frequently interpreted as a musical reflection on exile, spirituality, and reconciliation between cultural identities.

The Toccata, BV 287 completes the program with a return to outward virtuosity, though refracted through Busoni's modernist lens. Structured as a triptych--Preludio, Fantasia, and Ciaccona--it merges baroque formal archetypes with a highly chromatic, architecturally complex language. The Ciaccona, in particular, transforms the traditional ground bass into a vehicle for large-scale structural development, culminating in a synthesis of contrapuntal rigor and pianistic power that anticipates later twentieth-century approaches to form and texture.

Italian pianist Emanuele Delucchi brings exceptional authority to this repertoire, combining scholarly insight with formidable technical command. Born in 1987, he trained in Genoa, Imola, and Bozen, graduating with highest honors before completing a diploma in composition--an aspect that informs his analytical approach to performance. Delucchi has built a distinctive career around the rediscovery of neglected and technically demanding repertoire, including rare works by Alkan, Czerny, and Godowsky. His recordings for labels such as Toccata Classics, Dynamic, and Piano Classics have received critical acclaim, with particular recognition for his interpretations of Godowsky's intricate piano writing.

As a performer, Delucchi has appeared extensively across Europe and internationally, presenting programs that span from Renaissance music to contemporary works, often with a focus on uncovering overlooked corners of the repertoire. His dual perspective as pianist and composer allows him to navigate Busoni's highly complex textures with clarity and structural awareness, while maintaining a strong sense of expressive continuity. Beyond performance, his compositions--published in Milan and Osaka--further demonstrate his engagement with the broader evolution of musical language, making him an especially compelling interpreter of Busoni's forward-looking aesthetic.

Recorded at DV Studios in Crema on a Steinway Model D, the album captures both the intimacy and the architectural scale of Busoni's writing, allowing the full spectrum of tonal color and dynamic nuance to emerge with precision. This release stands as both a rigorous exploration of Busoni's late style and a statement of artistic identity from a pianist deeply aligned with its intellectual and expressive demands.
