Description
Emil de Waal Old News returns with Novelties, an album where deep musical roots meet freedom, openness, and innovation.
Novelties marks the return of Emil de Waal Old News, continuing the ensemble's journey of blending deep musical tradition with openness, spontaneity, and contemporary jazz expression. Closely connected to the legacy of the late clarinetist Elith 'Nulle' Nykjær Jørgensen, the group previously reimagined Danish and American classics by composers including Sidney Bechet, John Mogensen, Hans Henrik Ley, Aske Bentzon, Kenneth Knudsen, Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, and Sven Gyldmark. With Novelties, the ensemble honors Nulle's spirit while moving forward with an entirely new collection of original compositions.
Featuring Emil de Waal on drums, Jacob Anderskov on keyboards, Randi Laubek on vocals, Gustaf Ljunggren on guitars and reeds, and Henriette Groth on clarinet, the album showcases five of Denmark's leading jazz musicians. Their performances combine lyrical melodies, adventurous improvisation, and modern harmonic language while remaining firmly connected to the ensemble's rich musical heritage.
Presented on CD, Novelties is an elegant contemporary jazz recording that balances innovation with tradition, delivering a thoughtful collection of original works performed by one of Denmark's most distinctive ensembles.
