Seven pipers on stools and three basin ringers, close to the ground produce a continuum of sound. Basin ringing is historically practiced in Brittany, as far afield as Poitou and Anjou. It serves the same purpose as the bagpipe drone: to create a continuous sound. At the summer solstice, this popular practice consisted of 'pulling the rush' at the time of the midsummer bonfire.
