A re-release of the legendary Darkwave act with members from Strange Boutique, Shadow Project, and Christian Death.

Faith and the Muse's landmark debut Elyria returns in a newly remastered 2026 edition, restoring one of the defining recordings of American gothic rock and darkwave. Originally released in 1994, the album introduced the creative partnership of vocalist, songwriter and multi-disciplinary artist Monica Richards and musician/producer William Faith. Rather than remaining within conventional goth-rock boundaries, Elyria combined darkwave and post-punk with ethereal atmospheres, acoustic and folk elements, neo-classical textures and an overtly theatrical sense of romanticism.

Faith and the Muse emerged from two established branches of the American underground. Richards had fronted Washington, D.C. post-punk/gothic rock band Strange Boutique after beginning her musical career in the city's punk scene, while Faith had performed with Christian Death, Shadow Project and Mephisto Walz, as well as working with Sex Gang Children. The pair met when Strange Boutique shared a bill with Shadow Project, and in 1993 began exchanging musical ideas between Washington and Los Angeles. Richards eventually relocated to Los Angeles in December 1993, solidifying Faith and the Muse as a full-time collaboration. Recording for Elyria began in March 1994, with the album appearing that June.

Elyria immediately demonstrated the breadth that would become the duo's signature. Richards' expressive vocals move from the melodic immediacy of 'Sparks' and rhythmic 'All Lovers Lost' to the otherworldly atmosphere of 'Mercyground,' while Faith takes the vocal spotlight on the darker, heavier 'The Trauma Coil.' Instrumental passages such as 'Interlude: Annabell' broaden the album's palette, while traditional and literary influences surface throughout a program that includes 'The Unquiet Grave,' 'When to Her Lute Corinna Sings,' 'Vervain,' 'Heal' and the title track. Contemporary critical assessment singled out its mixture of romanticism, Celtic-influenced melody and atmospheric textures, qualities that helped distinguish Faith and the Muse from the broader Southern California goth scene.

The album established the foundation for a career in which Richards and Faith consistently resisted easy genre classification, subsequently incorporating folk, ambient, industrial, classical, world-music and experimental influences into their work. Elyria was followed by Annwyn, Beneath the Waves in 1996, Evidence of Heaven in 1999, Vera Causa in 2001, The Burning Season in 2003 and Ankoku Butoh in 2009, accompanied by extensive touring in the United States and Europe. More than three decades after its original release, Elyria remains the essential starting point for Faith and the Muse's distinctive fusion of gothic intensity, ethereal beauty, folk tradition and theatrical expression, now presented in newly remastered form for 2026.
