Love Is A Wish Away brings together punk doyenne Felice Rosser and FaithNYC with Justin Adams, the guitarist and producer known for his collaborations with Robert Plant and Tinariwen. Rosser’s distinctive vocals, described as combining qualities associated with Nina Simone and Meshell Ndegeocello, move across a wide range of musical settings, including infectious dance-rock, Afrobeat-tinged funk, moody and bass-heavy dub reggae, thunderous power pop, and storytelling ballads.
The digital release of Love Is A Wish Away caused considerable interest, with the title track approaching 400,000 streams on Spotify. Boston new wave DJ Oedipus hailed it as one of the year’s best records, while Iggy Pop and Huey Morgan featured the music on BBC Radio 6. Chris Frantz of Talking Heads described FaithNYC’s work as authentic, funky rock and roll built around a powerful groove and a positive force during troubled times.
Born in Detroit, Felice Rosser grew up amid Motown, the 1967 Detroit riots, Funkadelic, MC5, The Stooges, and the New York Dolls before moving to New York City for college. After seeing Television at CBGB, she became part of the downtown scene, befriended SAMO—the tag then used by Jean-Michel Basquiat—and began writing songs and playing bass. Punk’s do-it-yourself approach became central to her work, while rock and roll, funk, free jazz, dub, reggae, and the emerging hip-hop movement all entered her musical vocabulary.
Rosser later played bass in Brooklyn’s all-female reggae group Sistren before forming FaithNYC, which became part of the Black Rock Coalition. This two-disc stereo vinyl edition presents the album across ten tracks, revealing another facet of the expansive tradition of Black American music through FaithNYC’s synthesis of punk, funk, reggae, dub, rock, and experimental songwriting.
