This anthology of canons spans Machaut to today, combining new flute-choir works and inventive transcriptions in a rich chronological survey.

Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian is one of the most iconic representatives of Soviet music. His output for the piano includes famous works such as the Toccata, but also lesser-known masterpieces such as many of those featured in this Da Vinci Classics CD. Predating Dmitri Shostakovich's masterful Preludes and Fugues, Khachaturian's Recitatives and Fugues blend his mastery of counterpoint with his deep knowledge of Armenia's traditional musical heritage. His pieces for children are a fascinating compilation of musically interesting and appealing works/ his Sonata and his Vocalise from Othello (a film score) also deserve greater dissemination.

This album features works in canon form written by 27 musicians from the 14th century Guillaume de Machaut to contemporary composers, arranged for flute ensemble and recorded in chronological order by Maria Teresa Carlevato and Gian Paolo Guelcho. Based in Piedmont, Italy, Fluten am Bass is a unique ensemble that flexibly combines flute with harp, accordion, keyboard, and percussion instruments.
