Description
A luminous compendium of writing and improvisations by Zampini, who should strictly be defined first as a musician and then as a guitarist.
No glittering features, therefore, but a solid and supportive trio in search of sonic clarity. Zampini, for his part, builds song after song an anthology of the possibilities of clean sound, with just the right amount of reverb to give space to the listener, who can enjoy every melodic and harmonic extension. The Tuscan guitarist does not imitate Bill Frisell, Umberto Fiorentino, or John Abercrombie, just to give a sense of the atmosphere, but has internalized their lessons to such an extent that he offers a new improvisational language. On the one hand, he builds embellishments mainly on pull-offs and legato; on the other, he enhances the potential beauty of the guitar fretboard by exploiting its horizontality. The result of his objective virtuosity, which is never flaunted, benefits the cantabile, even when the melodies climb over dissonances and clusters. As the great masters have always said, if you can make even difficult things look easy, you know your subject matter in depth and have a profound understanding of it. The long phrasing, pauses, pedals, and obbligatos are endowed with a consequentiality that is not exactly common, where everything is transcribable and ineffable at the same time.
Zampini cherishes his greatest dream and tightens his grip thanks to the rhythmic variety he brings to the table: from the even eights of Long Way to You to the vibrant swing of Serendipitous and Recap, where blues is not a pentatonic shortcut but a mood, the need to add a scratch to the giant and expanding fresco of jazz expression, as well as a respectful tribute to his tutelary deities.
In this sense, I Hear a Rhapsody, the only standard of the eight takes of «Somewhere, Everywhere», finds its own original path, right from the exposition of the theme, aware of the risk of getting caught up in the gigantic interpretations of John Coltrane, Jim Hall, and Bill Evans, investing in the alternations of tempo and portamento of Ballard's sumptuous drums.
