Description
Strikes D'Andrea as not being a power musician, and we like his identity as an artist who knows what toil and poetry is
For several years Franco D'Andrea had wanted to make a “live” album, and The opportunity finally presented itself to him, when André Francis, who had edited the recording of the entire Montpellier festival for Radio France, gave D'Andrea the concert tape that the musicians together with Red Records decided to release. The whole album is evidence of exceptional maturity on the solo, compositional, and organizational levels. There is a perfectly detailed sense of construction everywhere: from the preluding solo piano thematic “anticipations,” to the arranged expositions in unison, from the synthetic central recapitulations of the theme, to the timeless chamber interludes, to the teeming free sequences, to the ever-changing and often surprising closures. An album-balance of the quartet experience, and the first step toward new horizons. Ultimately a great record.
