Description
Invigorating Musical Novelties for Woodwinds, Piano, and Percussion
Classical A-Go-Go is the third contemporary classical solo album by Birdsongs of the Mesozoic's pianist/composer Erik Lindgren. It contains invigorating musical novelties for woodwinds, piano, and percussion. This body of work integrates scored acoustic chamber music with a rock aesthetic, reinforced by the use of drum kit scattered throughout the CD. On this crossover disc are eight original compositions (five are new versions of vintage Birdsongs' pieces), rollicking arrangements of four Raymond Scott selections (best known for accompanying classic Warner Brothers cartoons), Erik Satie's transcendental 'Reverie,' plus an irreverent chamber hip hop remake of the Edgar Winter Band's 1972 chestnut 'Frankenstein.' The CD concludes with Lindgren's first serious work 'Baroque-a-go-go,' which dates back to 1973 and was conceived as a parody of progressive rock. The ensemble consists of flute, clarinet, bassoon, acoustic piano, and percussion ('Coco Boudakian' employs a multi-tracked string quartet in lieu of piano). The CD features the Sonare Wind Trio, an established Boston-based group that performs live with Lindgren. Guest percussionists include Alloy Orchestra's Ken Winokur and Terry Donahue, Fluttr Effect's drummer Jason Marchionna, and DJ Flack (Anthony Flackett) who created the rhythm track for 'Frankenstein.' The Frankenstein Consort proves that art music can be both elevating and entertaining; this is one ensemble that can swing and sway, rock out, dazzle you with its virtuosity, and surprise you with a truly unique and hip musical vision.
