Description
With Gang Signs, Ricq is bringing other peoples nightmares to life as dance floor romances.
Peter Ricq is a creative work-a-colic. He has made a living by bringing dreams to
life as the creator of animated cartoons, his always shifting visual art, and as the
right brain of the electronic musical duo, Humans. We sit down in his condo where his brand new LED laced sound reactive cloud is stashed behind the couch, to talk about his latest project 'Geist' by Gang Signs. With Gang Signs, Ricq is bringing other peoples nightmares to life as dance floor romances. The majority of the lyrics on the forthcoming Geist begin as
adaptations of 1980s horror movie plots, Ricq tells me. I laugh because to me Geist seemed like a linear concept album starting with the ending of a relationship, through grief, recovery and debauchery tragically ending with a new less ideal lover. Ricq laughs and concedes that elements of my interpretation are certainly there, but only because those are the hearts he's pulled from the horror movies that fascinate him. 'The fly isn't about Jeff Goldblum turning into a Fly and killing people, it's about Gena Davis trying to love him while he does. The relationship is elevated through the horror lens, posing the question 'What do I do when the one I love is
a murdering monster?' Not to suggest that Gang Signs is a novelty horror act. This is just one
component of an exercise in limitation.
