Description
The final track features the leader speaking about his life in jazz.
George Young is a veteran studio musician who has contributed to recording sessions in many fields of music, as well as soundtracks and commercials, though the veteran saxophonist has only occasionally recorded as a leader. He's still a jazz player at heart, so he gathered some friends together in 1989 to make this CD for Chiaroscuro. Young plays five different instruments over the eight originals, though his lack of name recognition combined with focusing exclusively on his own pieces probably works against him in trying to reach would-be buyers in music stores. That's not to say the music isn't enjoyable. 'For Alvin and John' is dedicated to Al Cohn and Zoot Sims; this feature by Young and Lew Del Gatto on two tenor saxes is definitely an affectionate, swinging tribute. Young's soprano sax is a great foil for Del Gatto's clarinet in the happy 'Old Times,' while both men play clarinet in the dreamy 'Requiem for Two Clarinets' (with Young also doubling on soprano sax). Young also is heard on alto flute, alto sax, and tenor sax on the date. He is capably supported by pianist Ron Feuer, guitarist Bob DiNardo, bassistTony Marino, and either drummer Tom Whaley or Jamey Haddad. The final track features the leader speaking about his life in jazz.
