Description
Trailblazing late '80s femme rock outfit Girl Monstar return after three decades with new album-GRRRR!!
After more than three decades of silence, Australia's all-female garage-pop and hard-rock trailblazers Girl Monstar return in full force with GRRRR!!--a fierce, melodic, and unrelenting new album that captures the same raw energy and attitude that made them icons of the late '80s indie scene.
Formed in 1988, Girl Monstar earned their place in rock history through tireless gigging and undeniable charisma. Over the course of just five years, they played more than 200 shows across the Australian pub circuit, sharing stages with the Divinyls, Kings of the Sun, Hard-Ons, Celibate Rifles, New Christs, Hoodoo Gurus, and Skyhooks, as well as opening for international heavyweights like the Ramones, Poison, The Buzzcocks, and Skid Row. Their singles 'Surfing on a Wave of Love' and 'Joe Cool' (produced by Kevin Shirley) climbed the alternative charts in 1989 and 1990, received national radio airplay, and earned ARIA nominations for Best Independent Release.
The band released their debut album Monstereo Delicio in 1992 before bowing out with a fiery farewell at Melbourne's Big Day Out festival in 1993, headlined by Iggy Pop and Sonic Youth. In the years since, the members have built rich musical legacies: guitarist Anne McCue launched an acclaimed solo career, touring internationally with Lucinda Williams and Heart; vocalist/guitarist Sherry Rich moved to Nashville, recording with members of Wilco and forming The Grapes upon her return to Australia; drummer Sue Shaw kept the beat alive with the Exotics, Plastic Section, and the Wraylettes; and bassist Janene returned to Melbourne after time in the Northern Territory, reuniting with her former bandmates to reignite the spark.
Decades later, that chemistry remains electric. GRRRR!! captures the confidence, grit, and melody that made Girl Monstar a force to be reckoned with, while infusing their sound with the wisdom and power of experience. The result is a roaring 10-track set that bridges generations of rock fans with its unapologetic spirit and undeniable hooks--a long-awaited comeback that feels both nostalgic and utterly fresh.
