If you watch television in the US today, you'll see lots of advertisements for drugs - drugs for depression, drugs for eczema, drugs for your gut, drugs for your memory... Modern medicine and pharmacology have developed drugs for lots of conditions. But you won't see ads for a drug that's simply good for everything that ails you. That would be outrageous, not to mention illegal. No drug today promises to help you with every one of these problems: nervousness, indigestion, chronic fatigue, loss of appetite, loss of strength, inability to sleep, malnutrition, skin disorders, eye disorders, constipation, and gassiness. But in the 1940s and early 50s, Hadacol claimed all that and more. Was there anyone immune to all these problems of everyday living? If you were part of the audience, the remedy seemed made for you. It was cheap enough - certainly cheaper than visiting some fancy doctor's office and then filling a prescription. And one way or another, Hadacol worked. At least it made lots of people feel better and their testimonials added even more ailments to the list of things Hadacol could fix. The fact that it was 12% alcohol probably contributed to the sense of well-being that Hadacol provided. Hadacol started small, a homemade backyard brew in Abbeville Lousiana in 1944. Over the course of seven years it became a nationwide phenomenon - talked about on radio and television, discussed in 'Time Magazine,' advertised in newspapers all over the country. In 1950, Hadacol was the bestselling proprietary medicine in the world and it even outsold Bayer Aspirin. In 1950 and 1951, Hadacol took the snake-oil business to a whole other level. History's biggest-ever medicine show, 'The Hadacol Caravan,' toured the country featuring stars as varied as Hank Williams, Carmen Miranda and Bob Hope. And Hadacol inspired a lot of music, much of which we will present here.
