Pianos and organs are seldom heard together, even though they regularly feature both as soloists and in chamber ensemble
Pianos and organs are seldom heard together, even though they regularly feature both as soloists and in chamber ensembles. The combination is far from new, its history spanning the period from the late 19th century to the present day. Johann Sebastian Bach is already known to have performed concercos for two or more keyboard instruments using a mixture of organs, harpsichords, clavichords and possibly early pianos. The golden era of piano and organ duos came in 20th century France. It was preceded by the growing popularity of harmoniums as instruments for the home in the 19th century and such chamber repertoire as the duos for piano and harmoniumor organ by Widor and Saint~Saens date from this period.
