The double album Complete Works for Solo Piano, conceived to mark the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel's birth, offers a comprehensive portrait of his keyboard universe. From the early experiments of Sérénade grotesque and Menuet antique to the vertiginous architectures of Gaspard de la nuit and Miroirs, and from the poised elegance of Pavane pour une infante défunte and Valses nobles et sentimentales to the elegiac neoclassicism of Le tombeau de Couperin, the program traces, almost year by year, the gradual crystallization of Ravel's compositional language. The piano emerges at once as an alchemical laboratory of color and as an inward-looking mirror, in which water, bells, masks, nocturnal visions and archaic dances are transmuted into sonic emblems of a modernity that is simultaneously lucid, exquisitely chiseled and quietly unsettling.
