Description
Four Iranian women in the summer of the 1953 coup d état...
Loosely adapted from Shahrnush Parsipur's magical realist novel of the same name, WOMEN WITHOUT MEN defiantly portrays the intertwining lives and perspectives of four Iranian women of different class backgrounds, set against the upheaval of the 1953 coup d'état- a pivotal moment in history that brought massive demonstrations (and fatalities) to the late-summer streets of Tehran, by way of an American-led, British-backed covert operation that reinstated the Shah to power, amidst great turmoil. Winner of the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival and artist/photographer Shirin Neshat's directorial debut, WOMEN WITHOUT MEN is a hauntingly powerful allegory and statement on women's desires and political freedoms- especially in but not limited to Iran, where the film is banned.
