Description
Dexterous, cathartic, high energy post-punk melodicism that packs a punch.
'Pippins' is the new album by Portland post-punk band Inny. Born out of a need to preoccupy their own anxieties, the band taps into a potent mix of noise rock and indie elements which draw to mind the Dischord and Touch & Go rosters of yesteryear while creatively reaching for the road ahead. A little mathy, a little proggy, - loud instrumentation and idiosyncratic rhythms crossed with a deft use of sonic dynamics and an almost 'pop' sheen that adds catchiness to the cacophony. Inny traverse varied emotional terrain with a dexterity finely tuned toward cathartic release.
The 'Pippins' album features 9 tracks recorded during the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the band did all the recording and production themselves, taking ample time over the course of several months to experiment and flesh out arrangements in their home studio. Listen closely and you'll hear layers of piano, synths, percussion and field recordings. Tasteful harmonies are placed to great effect, and cryptic, beautifully poetic lyrics explore themes of unease, inertia, yearning, loss and transformation.
Merriam-Webster gives the following definitions of the word, 'Pippin' -- '1. A crisp, tart apple 2. A highly admired or very admirable person or thing.' Each of the 9 songs on this album is a 'pippin'-- unique, delectable, well-rounded in weight and content, crisp and tart. Admirable encapsulations, whole unto themselves.
