Description
This is the only solo CD featuring Irene Dunne, who was often described as the best actress never to win an Academy Award despite being nominated 5 times for the Best Actress Oscar. Musically-trained Irene Dunne was first a Broadway star who then became a popular leading lady in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s. Nominated 5 times for the Best Actress Academy Award, Dunne never won. In 1935 she co-starred with Fred Astaire in the film musical, 'Roberta', with a score by Jerome Kern, in which she sang 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes' and 'Lovely to Look At' which cracked the Top 20. Dunne also played the role of Magnolia in the first 'talkie' version of the musical 'Show Boat' in 1936 where she sang 'Make Believe'. Apart from these delightful Jerome Kern songs contained in this CD we have also included previously un-issued tracks from the vaults and alternate takes where Dunne had chosen from the Great American Songbook making this a historically important release.
