'I want to move the world, one poem at a time.' On Say Yes evolved, she transforms poetry into powerful songs that explore love, identity, resilience, and the search for her African roots, offering the perspective of a confident woman navigating the complexities of modern life. Born in Boston to Nigerian parents, Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo first earned a degree in Pharmacy from Northeastern University and worked as a pharmacist for nearly a decade. Throughout those years, however, poetry remained her true calling. Inspired by the spiritual power of writing, she left pharmacy behind and quickly established herself as an acclaimed spoken-word artist, sharing stages with renowned performers including Chuck D, Gil Scott-Heron, Sonia Sanchez, and Amiri Baraka. Her passion for artistic exploration soon led her into music. Blending spoken word with soul, jazz, funk, blues, reggae, pop, and rock, Iyeoka developed a style that is uniquely her own. After releasing several independent projects, she collaborated with producer David Franz, refining her sound into the melodic, song-oriented approach that culminated in Say Yes, her breakthrough album in the United States. The album produced two defining moments in her career. 'The Yellow Brick Road Song' became the theme for the television series Fairly Legal, while 'Simply Falling' evolved into a global YouTube phenomenon, attracting more than 260 million views. Warmth, optimism, and authenticity remain at the heart of Iyeoka's music. Her mission has changed little over the years: while she once sought to heal through medicine, she now aims to touch and inspire people through poetry and song.
