Description

He was a note showman, famous for his Zebra-patterned suits

Let's Roll: The Singles Collection 1952–60 chronicles the formative recording career of J.B. Lenoir, one of the most distinctive and socially conscious figures in Chicago blues. Born in Mississippi in 1929, Lenoir learned his craft alongside blues greats including Sonny Boy Williamson and Elmore James before relocating to Chicago in 1949. Working with influential musicians such as Big Bill Broonzy, Big Maceo Merriweather, Memphis Minnie, and Muddy Waters, he developed a highly individual style that combined expressive guitar playing, sharp songwriting, and a flair for performance. Famous for his striking zebra-patterned suits and fearless social commentary, Lenoir became known for songs such as 'Eisenhower Blues,' even though commercial success largely eluded him during his lifetime. He died tragically following a car accident in 1968, leaving behind a body of work whose influence has continued to grow.

This comprehensive 54-track, 2-CD collection gathers his recordings for the J.O.B., Chess, Parrot, Checker, Shad, and VeeJay labels between 1952 and 1960. Included are his U.S. R&B Top 11 hit 'Mamma Talk To Your Daughter' alongside favorites including 'Let's Roll,' 'Don't Dog Your Woman,' and 'Don't Touch My Head.' The collection also features performances with Sunnyland Slim, Snooky Pryor, Willie Dixon, Leroy Foster, Alfred Wallace, Joe Montgomery, Ernest Cotton, Robert Lockwood Jr., and many of the finest musicians of the Chicago blues scene.

Spanning nearly a decade of essential recordings, Let's Roll: The Singles Collection 1952–60 provides the definitive overview of J.B. Lenoir's most productive years, highlighting both his musical brilliance and his enduring legacy as one of blues music's most original voices.
