Saxophonist Jacob Chung's fourth album as leader, That Secret Place, reveals a sonic tableau of the highest of highs and the lowest of lows of his adventures living in NYC. On the title track, the quartet reminisces about the quiet bliss of closeness, while 'Jahbero' elucidates the chaos of the surrounding cityscape. Chung's original ballad, 'Pale Moon,' is dedicated to his late friend Lucio Tomasi; the song juxtaposes the serenity of the moon above against tragedy below. The quartet indulges in no melancholia on 'I Love You Samantha,' nor sentimentality on 'This Is New,' instead opting to bob-and-weave on these lesser-known standards. Wonder-drummer Willie Bowman claims a brisk drum feature on 'Just in Time,' building from the sizzle of cymbals alone up to a torrential downpour of strokes and accents. 'So Sorry, Please' is a nod to Chung's mentors in the New York underground bebop scene, and so are the first and last tracks, 'Be Well, Do Good' and 'Keep in Touch,' inspired by Mezzrow host David Sandman's catchphrase, (which is fashioned from Garrison Keillor), heard at the end of Pasquale Grasso Trio's sets most Monday nights. In style and repertoire, That Secret Place cuts straight to a sinewy realness that suggests a direction for Chung's sound as he enters artistic maturity: to rub harder where it stings.
